A constable of 168th battalion of the CRPF was killed in a Maoist ambush at Kamarguda village near Avapalli in Bijapur district about 400 km south of Raipur on Saturday.
According to the Bastar inspector general of police SRP Kalluri, a team of security forces comprising of CRPF and the district police were deployed to offer security cover for the road construction works between Avapalli and Basaguda when the Maoist ambushed the forces.
"The Maoists later opened fire on the troopers. The attack was swiftly relataliated. A CRPF constable Jignesh Patel (26), resident of Gujarat, was killed in the gunfire", the IG told HT.
In another incident at Bijapur a jawan of Cobra squad, the elite commandos of the CRPF, sustained serious injury in an encounter with Maoist near the forested terrain of Gangalur. His condition has been stated to be stable and out of danger.
Additional forces from the nearby base camps and police stations were rushed to the area and the search operation continued till late evening.
Maoists have presence in 16 of the 27 districts in Chhattisgarh. Bijapur is among the seven districts of strife-torn Bastar zone affected by violence of left-wing extremists.
