The CRPF has decided to strengthen its intelligence network in the naxalite-hit states to counter the left-wing extremism in the country.
K Vijay Kumar, Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who was in Nagpur on Thursday to meet the CRPF jawans injured during an encounter with the naxalites near Khobramendha forest in north Gadchiroli on Tuesday, said, “we are concentrating on intelligence-based operations in the border states.”
A CRPF jawan was killed and five others were injured in an encounter between Maoists and CRPF jawans in Khobramendha forest area near Malewada village under Kurkheda tahsil, bordering Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening.
The encounter began at 3.30 pm after the security forces acting on specific information went in for the search operations. When a group of CRPF jawans of 191 battalion reached near the area, the naxalites of CPI (Maoists) opened fire indiscriminately. The CRPF jawans retaliated immediately and a fierce encounter continued there for two hours.
Vijay Kumar said, he personally met officers and personnel deployed in Gadchiroli district to curb the naxalite menace and enquired about the Tuesday incident. “We have evolved certain strategies to generate confidence among the tribals. We are also trying to bring back the tribals, misguided by the Naxalites into mainstream by giving them adequate protection and rehabilitation,” he added.
Answering a question, he said that there was a need to equip the CRPF forces with modern weapons which were under consideration.
The CRPF chief expressed satisfaction over the joint operation among naxalite-hit states. He also held a meeting with the senior police officials and CRPF officials to review the operation in the border district.
