The rape and murder of a five-year-old girl of Kabir Basti in Dabwali on January 26 has sent shock waves through the whole town.
Members of various religious and social organisations staged a protest demanding capital punishment for all accused involved in the crime and a slew of reforms for the vulnerable section of society.
Stating that society did not have space for such anti-social elements, Ram Swaroop Mehta, president of Dabwali Bar Association, said: “We have passed a resolution in which the Punjab and Haryana high court has been requested to put the case under fast-track court and conduct hearings on day-today basis.”
The association also requested the director general of police (DGP) to get the case investigated in the most professional manner. Mehta said the accused should not be allowed any legal help.
Meanwhile, Bishnoi, Gujjar and Gaur Brahmin organisations demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the victim.
Later, they also took out a protest in the town touching the grain market, Kabir Chowk, New grain market, main bazaar, gol bazaar, Malaout road, Bathinda chowk, new bus stand road, Valmiki chowk, Colony road, Chautala road and reached mini-secretaritat.
A 31-member committee under the Jan Sangrash Samiti handed over a memorandum to the sub-divisional magistrate with five demands.
The five demands are: hearing the case in a fast-track court, preparing a list of persons with criminal background in the town, ensuring safety of children and women, setting up a primary government school in Kabir Basti in the memory of the victim and financial help to the victim’s family.
The case at a glance
Two persons identified as Pawan alias Chhiller and Vikas alias Vikki (in their 20s) — neighbours of the victim — allegedly abducted the minor girl while she was playing outside her house on January 26 in Dabwali.
Police investigations have revealed that the duo had taken drugs, bought from a local medical shop, before committing the crime.
Police said the duo had taken the girl to the outskirts of the village and raped her, after which she had lost consciousness. “The statements given by the accused are very disturbing. They said they had thrown the victim in a nearby pond when she cried out of pain owing to injuries inflicting upon her,” police said.
The matter came to fore while the police were searching for a missing girl and happened to detain both the perpetrators who were roaming near the spot in a suspicious manner. After interrogating both of them, the victim’s body was fished out of the pond.
