A GROUP of six dacoits escaped from Pandrinath police station using improvised objects as weapons and injuring three policemen on guard duty at about 4.30 am on Sunday. Two of the three policemen are in a serious condition. One of the policemen also fired at the dacoits in vain.

TI Kailash Chandra Malviya has been line attached in connection with the incident. The six dacoits - Roshan of Beedi Nagar, Shyam of Yashoda Nagar, Dinesh of Khurail, Ravi of Mahesh Gauri Nagar, Ankit of Gauri Nagar and Laxman of Bhagirathpura - were lodged in the cell. In the morning, Ankit called for constable Shobharam, who was on guard duty, and expressed the need to use the toilet. No sooner had the guard opened the lockup door, all six attacked him.

The dacoits had broken loose an iron pipe used in the lavatory inside the cell and using it as a weapon hit the guard. Hearing the commotion constables Raju Singh Chauhan and Sri Ram Bhadoria rushed to the aid of the fallen guard and were in turn hit on the head. Shobharam fired at the fleeting dacoits from his service three-knot-three rifle.

The accused took less than five minutes in making good their escape indicating that they had hatched their plan a long time ago and used it to perfection. It is learnt that one of their gang members was delayed due to being held back by a police constable, but they managed to wrest him free.

Again showing their preparedness they fled in different directions in order to distract and divide their followers and thus evade arrest by minimising chances of getting caught. Three of the fugitives ran in the direction of Rajwada, two towards Choithram and one towards Macchi Bazaar.

Constables Chauhan and Bhadoria have received head injury and are unconscious, while Shobharam received injury on the hand. The three were brought to the MY Hospital for treatment from where Shobharam was discharged with bandages on his wrist. The other two being in a serious condition have been shifted to Gokuldas Hospital.

Taking serious note of the incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Anshuman Yadav in the evening issued the orders to line attach the TI. The incident occurring early in the morning brought all senior police officials on their feet barely hours after spending Saturday evening on their toes due to communal tension in the City.

Yadav said that relatives and friends of the accused are being questioned and that government rules cover for treatment of the injured policemen who were on duty at the time.

CSP Dhananjay Shah said that the six dacoits had been arrested while planning a dacoity from near Hotel Sindh Karachi three days ago. He clarified that the police station was working with less force at the time of escape, as all senior officials were busy in law and order duty in the communally sensitive areas of the City.

Shah explained that the cell has a lavatory within but it was choked from some time necessitating inmates to be brought out and this might have given them the idea for planning their escape.

Three police teams have been formed and have been sent in different directions in search of the fugitives. The police believe that they might have travelled towards Dewas and are leaving no stone unturned in netting the escaped.
