SO, chowki in-charge suspended

CITY CRIME reached it zenith when criminals struck at the houses of two ‘saraffa’ traders, killed three persons and raped two before escaping with valuables, in Yashoda Nagar, on Thursday night. Though both the houses are at a stone’s throw from the Yashoda Nagar police chowki, the cops did not get wind of the gruesome crime being committed in its neighbourhood.

Gopal (19), son of Shankarcharya Nagar resident Rajendra Dwivedi, and his sister Pratiksha (17) were battered to death by unidentified miscreants. The miscreants raped Pratiksha before killing her. Rajendra Dwivedi and his wife Mamta are battling for their life in a hospital.

After creating mayhem in the Dwivedi household, the dacoits attacked the house of his neighbour and saraffa trader, Devendra. The miscreants raped Devendra’s wife Renu (30), who died in the hospital this morning. Devendra and his son Rishi (4) are critically injured and undergoing treatment at a private nursing home.

The dacoits used the handle of a handpump and a hammer to attack their targets.

When the residents came to know about the incident, they blocked the road and attacked the Yashoda Nagar Police chowki. The mob damaged furniture of the police chowki.

The top brass of the city police also took time to react. SSP PC Meena reached the spot in the morning and ordered the suspension of station officer Sujeet Kumar Dubey and chowki in-charge Triloki Singh. The local traders organised a bandh against the incident and police inaction.

The political leadership also rushed to the site on hearing about the incident. Mayor Ravindra Patni and Congress MLA Ajay Kapoor were among the leaders to visit the spot.

Patni also went to the hospitals where Rajendra, Devendra and Rishi are undergoing treatment. Later, Patni said, “Kanpur has become the Bihar of UP. The police remain inactive, while mafia, who are patronized by ministers, call the shots”.

The local residents blamed the station officer and the chowki in-charge of patronising criminals and indulging in extortion.
