Dalits under attack from 'all'

india Updated: Aug 17, 2006 14:19 IST

Apropos Harsh Mander's story "Freedom's just another word", it is indeed sad that Dalits are discriminated against, in our society even in the 21st century.

However, I disagree with him when he constantly blames the upper castes for the same. Atrocities against Dalits are carried out by the OBCs to a much greater extent than the upper castes. Given their sheer number (52 per cent, if we go by the Mandal's estimation, that is) leads to OBCs having many more contacts with Dalits than upper castes.

Again, it is wrong to assume that the OBCs treat Dalits like their brothers. Rather, Dalits are the biggest targets of OBCs because after gaining political power, they are looking for other groups to “rule over”, i.e. to show their power and Dalits become soft targets for such purposes.

This can indeed be gauged from the fact that recent attack on Dalits in Bihar has been carried out by the Yadavs not the upper castes.
