A 23-year-old dance instructor has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping his 16-year-old student.

“Malad resident Shayan Dey works as an instructor with the Shiamak Davar dance institute in Borivli and the girl was his student. They knew each other for the last two months,” said assistant police inspector Raju K. Mane of the Kashimira police station.

“He told the victim that he would take her to a dance programme in Baroda but took her to Pune instead. They stayed at a Pune lodge from September 11 to 16.”

On September 12, the girl’s parents filed a missing person’s complaint and the police traced them through their call records and brought them back to the city.

On Friday, the police took the girl to the Thane Civil Hospital for a medical check-up. “We don’t know whether the accused forced himself on her. We will know that only after the medical reports arrive,” said Mane.

Dey was arrested on Thursday under Section 366 (A) (procuration of minor girl) of the Indian Penal Code. The next day, the Thane court remanded him in police custody until Monday.

“The police asked for his remand to carry out medical tests,” said public prosecutor Laxman Rathod.
