Dare to bare? No fuss
Sultry new faces choose sex over quality to get noticed.india Updated: Dec 15, 2006 19:00 IST
Dare to bare? Well, if yes, you have made the right choice baby, after all it’s only SRK and sex that sells in Bollywood.
The latest babes in the industry are willing to do all that it takes to create a wave. They have no inhibitions when it comes to shedding clothes, doing an intimate scene or for that matter smooching innumerable times on screen. Why not? It gives them instant recognition and they aren’t complaining.
Like 18-year-old Jiah Khan, who makes her debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd, has left no stone unturned to turn heads with her stormy presence or Nisha Kothari, who made a splashing entry in Bollywood with James.
So what prompts them? Says Nisha, “As a newcomer, I did everything that my character demanded.” But after establishing themselves with these sexy and glam roles, do tables turn in their favour?
Adds Payal Rohtagi, who had nothing but few C-grade films to her credit till yesterday but can now boast of a good role in Apna Sapna Money Money, “I have done certain projects which might not be worth a mention, but I don’t regret it. My work has helped me.”
However, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, says, “By shedding clothes, these girls manage to cater to the popular demands of the commercial cinema. But after they have reached a certain point, these girls succumb to the old middle-class milieu.”
Ram Gopal Varma, on the other hand, maintains, “I don’t like simple girls. For me, a woman is all about sensuality and oomph factor and that is how I like to portray her in my films.”
Not too long ago, Mallika Sherawat and Neha Dhupia made news not because of their acting prowess but for their bold approach. Once they have been there and done that, the starlets change their tune.
For, then it is the length and substance of the role that matter. Why else would these glam babes struggle for a non-glam image or meaty roles. Well, that’s what makes a wellscripted story.
