Daring jail escape

The preparations for the great escape were perfect. The prisoners had devised a way to cut the iron rods of the toilet window, built a ladder by tying small pieces of iron rods and pipes with cloth to climb the jail’s high walls, and possibly bribed jail officials.

The preparations for the great escape were perfect. The prisoners had devised a way to cut the iron rods of the toilet window, built a ladder by tying small pieces of iron rods and pipes with cloth to climb the jail’s high walls, and possibly bribed jail officials.

A downpour on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday gave nine prisoners of Meerut’s district jail the ideal cover to put their plan successfully into action.

Following the escape, red-faced officials are scrambling for explanations. The UP government on Tuesday suspended 15 jail officials, including senior superintendent (jail) R.N. Upadhaya, a deputy jailor, two head wardens and 11 guards who were on duty on Monday.

While seven escapees are serving life sentences, two are undertrials. District Magistrate Bhuvnesh Kumar has ordered a magisterial inquiry. “Police parties have been dispatched to nab the escaped criminals,” said Kumar, who did not rule out the connivance of jail staff in the getaway.

“They escaped between 12 in the night and 2 am while it was raining heavily,” he said. “It seemed that they (the prisoners) had been working on the plan for the past few months,” said Kumar, who visited the jail with DIG Police J.N. Singh.

Jail staff are being grilled for clues. “We shall be able to know about the details of the plan and those who reportedly helped the prisoners to break from the jail, by today evening,” Kumar said.
