Door-to-door searches and raids continued in violence-torn Gursahaigunj of Kannauj for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Police have arrested 19 people for the violence that engulfed the town, nearly 100 km west of Kanpur, after a truck crushed four children to death on Wednesday. College student Vipin Jatav, 23, was killed in the subsequent police firing.

In the FIR, police claim to have fired only five rounds that lasted for about two hours. Police have said the mob fired at will. Jatav has also been named as an accused in an FIR.

The FIR was filed at 1.45 pm when senior officials were still battling with the mob. There have also been allegations that the 19 arrested for rioting were picked from their homes.

SP Kannauj Rajendra Singh said a heavy police contingent had been deployed in the town. "The situation is under control. But security has been heightened to keep trouble makers in check."

Meanwhile, BJP workers staged dharnas across the state to protest detention of their leaders who were stopped from visiting the town.
