A day after the Shiv Sena won the Bhiwandi (East) Assembly seat, the situation at Cadbury junction turned tense, as a hoarding ridiculing Samajwadi Party Member of Legislative Assembly Abu Asim Azmi was put up by the Shiv Sena.
The hoarding carried a caricature of Eknath Shinde, a Sena MLA from Thane, carrying the saffron flag, standing on Azmi.
Samajwadi Party workers gathered at the junction demanding that the hoarding be removed. “They have insulted our leader Azmi and we gathered there to demand that the hoarding be brought down. Sainiks also vandalised one of our member’s car,” said SP’s Thane president Ramnayan Yadav.
Sena members said they didn’t vandalise the car. “We had nothing to do with the damaged car. We reached the spot after the police,” said Sena’s district deputy chief Naresh Mhaske.
The police have brought down the hoarding and registered a case against Sena workers. “We have registered a case of rioting and violation of prohibitory orders at the Naupada police station,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Naupada) R. S. Tadvi.
