Some of the India’s top television production companies have been shown the door by Doordarshan (DD) for submitting blank CDs or CDs of pilot programmes instead of freshly-shot episodes they had contracted to submit to the public broadcaster.

DD blacklisted 13 production companies last week for cheating but decided against taking legal action. “Taking a lenient view, Doordarshan has no intention to initiate legal proceedings against you at the moment,” an order dispatched to the companies for committing a fraud under the short-term acquisition scheme, 2006-07, stated.

Prominent companies banned for two years include BAG Films, which had got a contract to produce a tele-series Dil Ne Dil Se Kaha Yeh Wada Raha, Touchstone Communications for the teleseries Manzar Pase Manzar and Montage Films for a programme called Faisla.

The fraud was exposed when a DD official called for a CD for personal viewing. He found the CD to be a blank. On further pursuance he found that a large number of CDs submitted were fakes. “The entire bungling was being done with the help of lower level DD officials,” a senior DD official told HT.

While the majority of TV production companies banned are from Delhi, there are two from Mumbai and one from Jammu and Kashmir.
