Facebook has been issued a death threat. Cyber space is abuzz as an anonymous internet hacking group has declared their intention to “destroy” the site by November 5.
Reactions began to pour in as the group announced their intentions in a YouTube video called Operation Facebook, uploaded a few days ago. “Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed,” says the video, adding that the site invades the privacy of all its 750 million users. An electronically masked voice goes on to invite like-minded people to join the “cause”. At the time of going to press, the video had over six lakh hits. While Facebook is yet to issue an official statement reacting to the threat, members say they are certain that the site will take adequate security measures.
Actor Sanjay Suri, who funded his film I AM through Facebook, says, “Don’t know how much to believe in the threat but I am sure FB would have taken best possible measures to protect their technology.” Actor Jacky Bhagnani says, “It will be a worldwide disaster if at all this happens.” Actor Mukul Dev feels, “Facebook has become a very important part of people’s lives today. These hackers should think twice before doing it.”
However, there are some who see the brighter side of the possibility. “FB has turned a lot of people into addicts. I have seen that sometimes even my bank manager is busy social networking rather than attend to the people who are waiting,” says model-actor Aryan Vaid.
