The death toll in the school bus mishap in Anantnag district has risen to nine as another student succumbed to injuries last night, police said on Friday.

The student succumbed to injuries late last night at a hospital in Srinagar, they said.

The bus skidded off a mountainous road and fell into a 300-ft gorge at Kandiwara in Kokernag area on Thursday. While four students died on the spot, others succumbed to injuries at hospitals.

The mishap took place when the driver of the bus, which was on way to Kokernag from Diyalgam to drop students of a private high school, lost control while negotiating a blind curve.

The J&K government has announced ex-gratia relief of Rs. 1 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 10,000 each for the injured.
