In a tragic incident, three children of a family died after members of an entire family consumed poison on Saturday night to escape the wrath of staff of a private finance company after they had failed to pay Rs 1,800 that they owed to the company.
According to sources, the three children, including Mantu Kumar (12) and Ravi Kumar (10) and Sugni Kumari (8), died at Sirania village falling under Mufassil police station of the district. The village is just five kilometres from the district headquarters. Their parents Rajiv Paswan and Rita Devi are undergoing treatment at the district hospital where their condition was stated to be “precarious”.
Incidentally, Rajiv, who ekes out his living pulling rickshaws, had repaid a major portion of the total loan of Rs 18,000 and only Rs 1,800 was remaining.
The police said Rajiv had taken the loan from the private firm. The poor man could not tolerate the mounting pressure for repayment.
Desperate, the family collectively took the extreme step on Saturday night, said DSP Narendra Kumar Singh. The police are looking into the matter and the guilty would not be spared, he added.
The village is inhabited by poor people who are still dependent on private moneylenders.
Meanwhile, the police have started interrogation of the private finance firm staff.
