A brace by Kulbhushan Mandrwal enabled Delhi to score a creditable 2-0 victory over Himachal Pradesh in the 43rd Under-19 national football championship at Malerkotla (Sangrur), Punjab on Friday.
Delhi squandered several goalscoring opportunities and had to wait till the final 10 minutes of the game to break the deadlock.
Mandrwal found the net in the 80th minute after a solo effort. The second came about when Delhi got a penalty just before the end after Chander Mohan was fouled inside the Himachal penalty area.
Mandrwal converted the spot kick to open Delhi's campaign for Dr B C Roy Trophy with a win.
They take on Jammu and Kashmir in their next match on Sunday while Himachal take on Uttaranchal.
In another match in the same group, Jammu and Kashmir played out a 2-2 draw with Uttaranchal.
