Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her Cabinet colleagues met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday to express their gratitude for the notification of the Master Plan. Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy too accompanied them and gave a brief overview of the MPD to the Prime Minister.

The Delhi team told the PM that most of the problems which the people of the city faced in the last over one year would be solved with the notification of the MPD.

As it was a day of "thanksgiving" to the agencies involved in the notification of the MPD, outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar took another delegation to Reddy's house. Addressing them, Reddy said, "this is a plan for the people through which reconstruction of Delhi would be done." He said the ministry has been able to give relief to lakhs of people in the city through the document.

The Delhi Congress has already passed a resolution thanking all concerned and inviting party president Sonia Gandhi for a public rally in the capital.

The only discordant note in the season of "thanksgiving" is that of the opposition BJP. "The MPD is a political plan, notified in haste by the Congress to get votes in the MCD elections," said Delhi state party president Harsh Vardhan.

Speaking at a meeting of the office-bearers of the party, Harsh Vardhan alleged the MPD would lead to great imbalance in the city. "The condition of environment, basic civic amenities, greenery, forest area etc would only worsen," he said. He said the upward expansion would create "tall slums" and would be useless in the absence of basic amenities like water and power.
