A single mention of her son Vinay Sharma’s name and she looks you straight in the eye with the fury a mother — notwithstanding the fact that her son stands accused of a bestial sexual assault that shook the nation.

“What do you want to ask me? Go ask my son whatever you want in jail,” she yelled without waiting for the question outside her one-room house at the Ravidas camp slum cluster. “How does it matter what I want the verdict to be? I have been asking god the same question ever since my son was picked up. I haven’t received my answer yet so you will not get yours.”

Vinay’s sister, standing behind a curtain, waited a second before a smile of recognition spread across her face.

“They printed our pictures in today’s paper,” she complains. “People hate us more now. Don’t mind my mother — she’s been like this since they came and took him away.”

One of the six men allegedly involved in the December 16 gang rape, her brother was pursuing his graduation and working part-time as a gym instructor before the police had appeared at their door on December 17 morning last year.

He was accused not only of assaulting the 23-year-old physiotherapist’s friend before proceeding to sexually assault her but also of destroying evidence pertaining to the horrendous incident.

“He was used to these shenanigans long before he was arrested,” complained Laxmi, a neighbour.

“He used to get drunk and act like a man possessed every weekend. I hope they never let him out; animal.”

But Vinay’s little sister didn’t agree. She recalled how he had reportedly told his mother that he had not done anything to shame the family when the police came for him ‘that morning’.

“I know he was telling the truth,” she said.
