Delhi Government on Saturday signed an agreement with Bharti Wal Mart under which the wholesale chain will provide skill development training to unemployed youths in the city.

Department of Training and Technical Education of Delhi Government signed the memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the company, a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Walmart Inc.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Vice Chairman and MD of Bharti Enterprises Rajan Bharti Mittal were present on the occasion. The MoA was approved by Delhi Cabinet last month.

Dikshit also inaugurated the Bharti Walmart Training Centre at the Veer Savarkar Basic Training Centre.

"There is shortage of skilled manpower in the capital and the short term vocational certificate courses to be offered by the company will help the unemployed youths in getting jobs in organised retail sector," Dikshit said.

She said the Government decided to ink the MoA as per broad policy guidelines of the Planning Commission to improve the employability of youth in Delhi.

"The collaboration will go a long way in helping the youths gain employment," she said.

Wal-Mart Inc is the largest retail chain in the world while Bharti Enterprises is India's largest mobile telephone service provider.

Noting that the national capital has huge employment opportunities for trained people, Dikshit said that government decided to join hands with Bharti Wal Mart following instructions from National Skill Commission as well as policy guidelines of the Planning Commission.

She said all expenses for imparting the training will be borne by the company which will also provide administrative and support services at its own cost.

The company will also endeavour to ensure that trainees obtain decent wage employment on successful completion of training.

Mittal said retail sector is emerging as a future growth engine of India's economy and the joint initiative will lead the way in creating skilled talent pool for the sector

Successful candidates will be certified by Bharti Walmart at the end of the training programme. The company will also endeavour to ensure that candidates obtain employment on successful completion of the training.
