A lab assistant of a private school in Rohini has been arrested for allegedly molesting an eight-year-old student.

The victim, a class 3 student, had been making excuses for several weeks to avoid school. After her mother questioned her, the victim told her about the incident.

Investigation revealed that the accused, Harinder, a 40-year-old lab assistant, had allegedly molested the victim at least three or four times over the past few weeks.

“The victim refused to go to school no matter how hard her parents tried. On Wednesday morning, she narrated her ordeal to her mother. Her parents took her to the Rohini (south) police station and reported the incident,” said a police officer.

The police went to the school along with the victim and based on her statement, took the accused into custody.

“He was arrested and produced before a court. Later he was sent for 14-days’ judicial custody, said a police official.

“The accused has been booked under relevant sections of IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. We are trying to investigate if the accused had allegedly molested other students too,” said a police official.

The victim is being counselled by an NGO in the presence of her parents, he added.

Sources in the department said the accused had been suspended by the school authorities.

Earlier, in a similar incident in Rohini on September 26, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly molested by an attendant at her play school. The incident had triggered massive protests.

The accused was soon arrested but the incident had led to an agitation by parents. The parents claimed that the school authorities knew about the incident and had tried to hush it up.
