A 23-year-old woman, who was employed as a help at an Indian Army official's south Delhi residence, allegedly committed suicide in front of her two children following an altercation with her husband late on Friday evening.

The woman allegedly told her five-year-old son to witness her suicide and then call up his father to inform him about the incident. Identified as Roma, she hailed from West Bengal and lived at a rented house in Nivedita Kunj with her husband Sonu and two children aged one and five years respectively.

Sonu works at a petrol station in RK Puram's sector-three; Roma used to work as a domestic help at the house of a Brigadier.

According to police, Roma took the extreme step after she got into a heated argument with Sonu. "The couple fought often due to Sonu returning home late by an hour or two on a daily basis," said a police officer.

"It looks like a suicide case, but no suicide note was found in the house. We are still investigating the case from all plausible angles. Her husband is being questioned," said a police officer.

During questioning, Sonu told the police that he works in the evening shift and reaches home by 10 pm, however on Friday, he was late as he had some work at the petrol station. Sonu reached home at about 11 pm and when he knocked on the door, Roma refused to open it. Sonu later left the building.

Roma then allegedly hanged herself to death with her duppatta, making her five-year-old son witness the act. Her other child was also present with her. She had instructed her son to call his father after she died.

The child, called his father on his mobile phone and when his father arrived around midnight, he opened the door for him. Sonu found his wife hanging from a ceiling fan.

The family stood by Roma's hanging body in shock for hours before reporting the matter to police at 6.30 am on Saturday. A police team rushed to the spot. "The five-year-old child narrated the entire incident and admitted to seeing his mother die," the officer added.
