Delhi Police seeks Salem's custody in extortion case

A team of Delhi Police on Monday sought custody of extradited gangster Abu Salem in an extortion case registered against him in the national capital but the TADA court in Mumbai asked it to come back on July 14.

The Delhi Police team asked designated Judge PD Kode to give the custody of Salem as he was wanted in an extortion case being tried in Tis Hazari court in Delhi. It produced warrant from the court seeking Salem's custody.

The TADA court, however, deferred the matter to July 14 as Salem's lawyer Ashok Sarogi sought time to file a reply.

Salem is facing trial in the 1993 bomb blasts case, Ajit Dewani murder case and Pradeep Jain murder case.

These three cases are among the eight cited by the government in a Portugal court to seek extradition of the gangster. The trial of Salem in these cases is not yet over.

Eight months after Salem's extradition, a Delhi court has issued production warrant seeking his custody in an extortion case.

In the 1993 bomb blast case, the TADA court had separated his trial from those of the other accused.
