The Election Commission will run a special campaign to enrol nearly 9,000 Delhi police personnel and 35,000 state government officials as voters.
Even though these officials live in Delhi, they are not registered as voters. The special camps will be set up at police and government colonies from September 15. They will be given their electoral cards on September 29.
“For the first time, we have prepared a database of civil and police officials in Delhi with an aim to enrol them and facilitate them to cast their votes through postal ballots. Nearly 98,000 Delhi government employees, 35,000 central government employees and 45,000 Delhi police employees live in Delhi but several of them are not enrolled as voters,” said chief electoral officer Vijay Dev.
Explaining the benefit of the special drives to enroll voters, Dev said: “This is the first time that the gender ratio in electoral roll has crossed 800 (804 females to 1000 males),” Dev said.
The election office organised special camps in rural areas to register women voters and at educational institutions to register young voters.
Dev said the election office has put the location of each polling station on Google maps.
FIR against election officials
The office of Delhi’s chief electoral officer has lodged FIRs against three officers, initiated departmental inquiry against two and terminated the services of four data entry operators for criminal conspiracy and forgery in government records in two separate cases.
In the first case, the department ordered registration of an FIR against electoral roll and assistant electoral roll officers, a staff at a voter centre and a tout for forging electronic data and issuing a voter card though a tout in Chhatarpur assembly constituency.
In another case, action was taken against data entry operators and inquiry instituted against ERO and AERO for harassing an applicant in Rohini.
