With just five weeks to Delhi Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday applauded the Sheila Dikshit government’s development statistics and said he had no doubt the Congress will again form the government in the Capital.
"Sheila Dikshit government has transformed Delhi in the past 15 years. The Delhi Metro model is being emulated by other Indian states as well as Jakarta, Indonesia. The UPA government built a hi-tech and world-standard airport in Delhi. The number of buses has increased to almost double and there are more than 130 flyovers and over-bridges in Delhi. Five new universities have been opened and 50,000 seats have been created. I want the party workers now to go door-to-door and tell people about Congress’ achievements,” Gandhi said.
Amidst loud cheering from 8,000-odd crowd at the Kalamandir Ground in Mangolpuri in northwest Delhi, a Congress stronghold, Gandhi reminded people that it was the Congress-led UPA that gave the citizens of the country right to food, right to education and right to information.
"The Opposition asked us where the money to run the food security scheme would come from. We told them food is everybody's right and we managed to get the money," he said.
The Congress vice president said the Congress wants the contribution of the common man in running the government. “But the Opposition wants the common man to stay out of the decision making process and let bureaucrats run the government," Gandhi said.
The Congress is hoping for a fourth straight stint to run the government in Delhi. Other senior Delhi Congress leaders, including Dikshit, also attended the event.
“Every Indian should have the right to ask any question to the government, that’s why we brought in Right to Information. The decisions in closed rooms reached the people. There used to be ration cards earlier, which the needy never got. We ensured food should reach everyone.”
