IF THE Government schools run in dilapidated buildings, the condition of the District Education Office (DEO) at Mhow Naka Square entrusted with the government schools and education is not any better.

The DEO has upwards of a 100 schools under its charge and controls their functioning. However, the ramshackle condition of the nondescript building, though being located at close proximity to one of the major squares of the City, tells a story of neglect.

The century old colonial edifice located in a wilderness surrounded by a large vacant space overgrown with wild grass and trees welcomes any visitor only after he crosses a puddle of water.

The building from its inside is even more dangerous as the flooring has given way and the tiles are at uneven angles making walking without watching a hazardous exercise. The peeled off plaster and old coat of paint on the walls indicate how many years back the building had received a proper coat of paint.

The garden inside the campus with its wild appearance scares off any one thinking off passing his time there. The overgrown garden has insects of several varieties and even serpents, which have been cited at times and specially during monsoons.

The rooms have the bare minimum in the name of furniture and even the necessary filing cabinets are missing. Documents tied in cloth are kept at any place thought fit by the employees and they can be found from table and almirah tops to right outside in the open where they are exposed to the elements and on the mercy of rains.

According to the new DEO Maya Malviya the building is maintained with the funds released by the government while stress is given on improving the condition of schools.

There has been talk of shifting the office from a long time and further with the opening of a divisional level office service of several employees would be attached there and the remaining would be relocated to the more liveable portions of the building. But till that happens the building would continue housing the employees responsible for maintaining upkeep of schools.
