Dera followers attacked

The followers of Dera Sacha Sauda were allegedly attacked with naked swords as they were coming out of a religious congregation 'Naam Charcha' near Basant Nagar in Shimla Puri locality in Ludhiana on Sunday.

The followers of Dera Sacha Sauda were allegedly attacked with naked swords as they were coming out of a religious congregation 'Naam Charcha' near Basant Nagar in Shimla Puri locality in Ludhiana on Sunday.

Six of them were injured ,three of whom have been admitted to a local hospital.

SSP Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill said a case under various sections of IPC pertaining to grievous and simple injuries and violence has been registered against the culprits.

The situation, he claimed, was under control.

According to police and eye witness account the altercation took place when some followers of 'Ek Noor Khalsa' raised slogans against the Dera chief Baba Gurmit Ram Rahim as they saw the Dera followers coming out.

The slogan shouting group was carrying naked swords with which they allegedly attacked the Dera men.

Before the situation could take an uglier turn a police squad arrived on the scene and controlled the situation.

Some reinforcements of the police also arrived soon , they told.

All the injured were stated to be out of danger.

Meanwhile a spokesman of the 'Ek Noor Khalsa' alleged that they were attacked with bricks by the followers of Dera when they peacefully demonstrating against the 'anti sikh' activities of the Dera. Some their activists were also injured in the incident, he added.

Manish Tewari a local Congress MP and spokesman of the AICC while strongly condemning the incident said that the freedom of worship was a fundamental constitutional right of every citizen in India and it was the responsibility of the state government to ensure it.
