Can you imagine Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in T-shirts with the Sahara logo like the Indian cricket team?

Almost certainly not, but that just might be on the cards, with Manchester United, the world’s most famous sports club, sending a sponsorship proposal to the Sahara India Pariwar.

This rather unexpected communication has apparently come about following Sahara’s sustained sponsorship of the Indian cricket team.

Sahara India’s head of corporate communications Abhijet Sarckar confirmed to Hindustan Times they had received the proposal, but refused to give details.

A Man U spokesperson also confirmed to HT that the club’s commercial director, Richard Arnold, had written to Sahara last month. According to the letter, Sahara is among a “select group” the club is contacting as a potential “partner for the world’s most iconic sports marketing tool, the Manchester United shirt”.

“The shirt sponsorship of Manchester United is a rare and high profile opportunity,” Arnold’s letter states. United have insurance giants AIG as their main sponsors but AIG was one of the big crashes in the US economic meltdown.

The packet from United, which HT examined, contained, among other things, a customised red United T-shirt with a Sahara logo.

The centrespread sees players wearing United T-shirts with various sponsors through the years. And then it has an image of Rooney in a T-shirt with the Sahara logo.
