Devi Ahilyabai?s statue unveiled

A STATUE of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, known for her able administration and interest in building temples, was unveiled in Parliament Library Building by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today.

Holkar was the daughter-in-law of the first Maratha Governor of Malwa, who eventually became the ruler of Malwa herself.
She was revered as a noble ruler who had rare social and political acumen.

The just and fair rule of Ahilyabai and her astute management of state finances are now regarded as the Golden Age of Malwa. The 75-1/2 inch bronze statue of Ahilyabai has been carved by well-known sculptor Shashikant Varke and donated by Sumitra Mahajan, MP, on behalf of Ahilyotsav Samiti, Indore.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, leader of Opposition L K Advani, Cabinet Ministers and MPs attended the function.
