A DIG in Karnataka has complained to the state government that a senior called him “you idiot” at least 10 times over phone on August 6.

DIG Manish Karbikar, posted in the directorate of civil rights enforcement, has alleged that DGP (police restructuring) BE Umapathy abused him despite being reminded that he was talking to a fellow IPS officer.

Karbikar’s complaint is with chief secretary SV Ranganath. “I will verify the facts and take steps,” said Ranganath.

According to a source privy to the developments, Karbikar has complained that one Narayana Swamy came to him to lodge a complaint against additional DGP KSN Chikkeruru for not taking an SC/ST case seriously. Chikkeruru is Karbikar’s senior in the civil rights enforcement department.

Karbikar advised Swamy to lodge his complaint at a police station because his office did not have the power to register such a case. Swamy reportedly told Karbikar he had already spoken to Umapathy and called the DGP on his mobile phone. Then he handed the phone to Karbikar.

“Karbikar has complained that Umapathy called him ‘you idiot’ repeatedly during this conversation and accused him of not responding to Swamy’s complaint,” the source added.

Karbikar and Umapathy were unavailable for comment.
