Human dignity is a splendid phenomenon. How did it emerge and why is it splendid? Before dignity emerged, life had to emerge. Without life, there is no dignity of life. Life formed itself but slowly.

When the amoebas emerged, that was an impressive step, for they are semi-intelligent organisms capable to react to the environment. Then the apes moved down from the trees and started to walk upright, sensing that this was the way for the future dignified beings.

Then the apes started using sticks, as tools, sensing that intelligence would be required for future beings beholding with dignity. The further we evolve, the more upright and ascending we become in our posture and thinking.

Then art was created to express our aspirations — as we wanted to go higher and beyond the earthly realm. Then the transcendent man emerged, trying to reach the heavenly realm; and at the same time trying to understand his soul.

For what is heaven for if you don't have the soul? And what is the soul for if there is no heaven as the point of ultimate aspirations?

This was exactly the point at which dignity was created. For dignity is this attribute of the human life when life is proud of itself for walking upright. Dignity is a resounding assurance that we are the sons and daughters of heaven and earth alike. We are naturally spiritual because light is our cradle. Dignity is the visible essence of our spirituality. We walk upright because we are united with heaven. We walk gently because we walk on the earth.

This form of dignity — as conveying our natural spirituality — was known in ancient times too. And it survived to our times among tribal people, especially among Native Americans.

Yes, this form of dignity has also survived in nearly all human societies, except those most severely repressed by organised religions.

Our innermost humanity has many expressions. Our dignity is one of them. acquiring dignity has been a pivotal point in our evolutionary development. Let us, therefore, embrace and guard our dignity lovingly.
