Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has sought more time from the Madhya Pradesh police to appear before them for interrogation in connection with his alleged involvement in a secretariat recruitment scam, his lawyer Ajay Gupta said on Tuesday.

Singh, who is away in the USA for the treatment of his daughter suffering from cancer, was to appear in the office of city superintendent of police (CSP, Jehangirabad) Salim Khan on September 30 in connection with the state assembly secretariat recruitment held during his chief ministership between 1993 and 2003. Singh has been accused of corruption, fraud and criminal conspiracy in the case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

His lawyer in an application detailed the reasons for Singh’s inability to appear before the police and sought rescheduling of the quizzing date any time after October 11. The application was handed over to Khan’s office by Singh’s local staff member O P Sharma in the afternoon. The response of the police to the request was not known. Gupta said, “ We hope they would take an appropriate decision and inform us.”

Former Speaker of the state assembly Srininwas Tiwari is also an accused in the case. But, he managed to secure an anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court against his arrest.

Digvjjaya Singh on Monday had tweeted from the USA on the notice issued to him by the police saying that he was not going to run away anywhere and would present before the police for interrogation in the case.

Salim Khan was not available for comments.
