Although it’s been a while since Abhishek Bachchan’s look in Raavan was revealed. But a few know that it was director Mani Ratnam who gave the actor his hairdo for the character before the crew began filming at the exotic Kerala locations.

Earlier, after finalising Bachchan Jr for Yuva, Ratnam and his first outing together, the director had suggested the actor to go in for a short crop for his character Lallan Singh but he declined to accept the ‘cut’ because he wasn’t sure how it’d look on his face and whether it would affect the other projects he was working on.

Actor’s apprehensions
“Actors are apprehensive and particular about experimenting with their looks only to the extent that it suits the part and doesn’t force changes in the plans of the other films under production simultaneously,” he had said, adding that he was all praise for R Madhavan who cropped his hair for the same character in the Tamil version.

A source close to Bachchan says that he is extremely finicky about his hair and supervises the styling on his own. “If he’s not sure of something, then he’d rather not experiment rather than risk, ending up with a not-so-pleasant-for-his-own-eyes look. Instead of cutting his hair short, Abhishek grows his hair longer like he did for his character in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Drona,” says our source.

That’s how Bachchan sported long hair and a goatee coupled with stubble for his Lallan Singh avatar. “But at the same time, he had promised Mani that some day he would let him cut his hair for sure. He reiterated that he would do it only for him, and no one else,” reveals our source.

Keeping a promise
So, when the actor reached Kerela for the shoot of Raavan, Ratnam was surprised to be offered by Bachchan to style his hair. After the director’s ‘cut’, celebrity stylist Aalim stepped in to perfect the get up.

Aalim confirms, “It’s always great to work with someone like Mani Ratnam. He’s so clear about what he wants. All of us respect him immensely for making the movie exactly as he has visualised it.”
