A 13-year-old mentally and physically challenged girl was raped by a man in south Kashmir, a third incident of its kind in past one month in Muslim majority Kashmir.

Police arrested 25-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat of district Shopian and shifted him to central jail Srinagar after recording the statement of the victim in front of a magistrate. Police said that the medical report of the victim has confirmed rape.

Bhat, who is a neighbor of the victim, forced himself on the hapless girl taking advantage of her disability last week.

"Actually Bhat, a contractor by profession, was alone in his home when he abducted the girl to commit the heinous act," said Station House Officer, Shafaqat Attar.

Last week, a girl was allegedly gang raped by a group of youth after returning from her exams in North Kashmir. Earlier on June 1st, a five-year-old girl was raped by a 14-year-old boy in central Kashmir's Budgam district.

Crimes against women are rarely reported in Kashmir. The fresh case was also reported days after it happened as the girl could not convey her ordeal to her mother.

"Suffering from polio, the girl can't even talk properly. Infact it was only after the arrival of her father that the family comprehended her," said Attar.

The officer said that the girl was presented before the court after conducting her medical examination.
