Feeling hot? Have an affogato, the perfect summer mantra. For the uninitiated affogato is a coffee based beverage usually topped with espresso and a dash of caramel sauce. You can make an affogato by covering icecream with strong coffee.

The Italian word affogato literally means ‘to drown’. And preparing a cool glass of affogato involves mixing different ratios of various coffee drinks and icecream flavours.

The drink is also easy to concoct at home. All you have to do is brew some coffee and pour your favourite icecream over it. The most popular affogatos are vanilla, gelato and peppermint.

With the soaring mercury, affogato seems to have caught the city’s fancy like nothing before. Several cafes and coffee places are serving up this Italian delight.

Costa Coffee in Juhu, Gloria Jeans on Turner Road in Bandra, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Nariman Point and Barista Lavazza, all serve affogatos. The most popular being a delicate blend of Irish coffee and ice-cream topped with chocolate cookies.
