DM loses cools, slaps employee

Lucknow District Magistrate Amit Ghosh repeatedly slapped a Govt employee during an inspection after he apparently did not respond to his queries on an indefinite strike call. The slaps by a visibly agitated Ghosh in full view of the victim's colleagues triggered demands from the Opposition Congress for suspending the officer.

Lucknow District Magistrate (DM) Amit Kumar Ghosh on Friday morning allegedly slapped a striking government employee when the union leader hesitated in producing his identity card.

“The DM slapped him when the employee did not respond to some queries,” an official accompanying Ghosh told HT.

The incident took place at Krishi Bhawan in the presence of senior officials, including Lucknow Deputy Inspector General of Police Prem Prakash and a number of television journalists.

An indefinite strike call was given to protest Thursday’s baton charge on employees seeking better pay.

The DM, trying to persuade striking state employees to resume work, lost his cool when Ram Kumar Yadav, a senior office-bearer of one of the striking unions, failed to recognise him. The DM commanded: “Card dikhao. (Show me your I-card).” Yadav replied, “Hai (I have the card).” On this, the DM said, “To dikhao na (Why don’t you show it?)” and slapped him thrice.

Ghosh was at Krishi Bhawan to ensure that employees attended work in the wake of the strike call.

The union leaders have sought action against the DM and the DIG. “We demand that both the officers be suspended,” said Ramakant Mishra, leader of one of the unions.
