Following constant HT coverage about lax policing in Noida, the district magistrate (DM) and the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Gautam Budh Nagar district set out on a reality check late on Saturday night. And their experience was not all too pleasing.

The police presence was not good. Cops were found relaxing. One of the two cops at a police station was found watching a movie. The two top officials called the fire service (101) but a fire tender reached “the imaginary spot of fire” only after25 minutes. Police was also informed late “about the fire.” The duo has sought explanationand warned policemen.

A communiqué issued by the district information officer says the midnight round has sent shock waves across police stations as the two officials also checked general diaries and crime registers. Asking policemen to remain alert at all times and check crime or face the music, DM MKS Sundaram and SSP Praveen Kumar said surprise inspections would continue and would also be carried out at all outposts and highways leading to Delhi and other adjoining places.

As part of a prolonged coverage, highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in the city and the challenges facing the two new officials, HT had on March 30 carried a report “Task cut out for new DM, SSP.” The surprise inspection came hours within the administration reshuffled a number of policemen in Noida and Greater Noida to ensure better policing.

The two reached the sector 39 police station at 11.30 pm. There were only two policemen there. It’s here that the fire service failed to respond properly. The SSP took exact locations of all police control room (PCR) vans, warned cops of stern action in case of future lapses. He later said the idea also was to “activate” the PCR vans and ensure maximum alertness among the force.

The next stop was the sector 49 police station. A guard was found relaxing at the gate instead of being on duty. One of the two policemen was found watching a movie on TV. The SSP then told the station house officers of all the 17 police stations in the district to patrol their areas. The DM and the SSP visited some other areas and called it a day around 2 am on Sunday.
