Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual gold medal in the Olympics and ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair are to be awarded honorary doctorates by the SRM University in Chennai.
The degrees will be conferred on them during the fourth convocation of the University here on September 7, its Vice Chancellor P Sathyanarayan told reporters on Thursday.
Bindra, who won the gold in the 10 m air rifle event in the Beijing Olympics, will also lay the foundation stone for the proposed Rs 10 crore sports academy of the University.
The academy would spot and train talented students in hockey, basketball and volleyball, he said, adding that the university would provide them education and hostel accomodation free of cost to pursue their higher education.
SRM University also proposed to create a shooting range for which Bindra's expertise would be utilised, he said.
Bindra would also be given a cash award of Rs five lakh for his outstanding performance in the Beijing Olympics, he added.
