Villagers of Doda region air grievances

On a three-day tour to different villages of Doda, district chairman of Doda Development Forum (DDF) Rehmatullah Khora and president Ghulam Hassan visited various parts of Doda tehsil and held public meetings.

During the meetings, people of these areas raised the issue of non-payment of wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) since March 2013. People alleged that despite repeated requests to officers of the department concerned as well as higher authorities of the district administration nothing has been done so far.

They added that they have completed the work in their respective areas under the MGNREGA scheme but have not received payment against the work till date.

Some of the villagers said healthcare facilities are not available in remote panchayats of the tehsil. They claimed that these facilities might be running on paper only.

The educational institutions are running in these villages without teaching staff, they said, adding that a number of representation were made to officers of the district administration but they have got mere assurances.

They said schools were upgraded but infrastructure and teaching staff have not been provided in these schools. The villagers said teachers from rural schools were transferred to towns and no arrangements for teaching staff were made in educational institutions of the rural areas.

The functionaries of the forum assured the villagers of taking up all the genuine issues with higher authorities in the first instance and in case of failure the DDF would approach the Jammu and Kashmir high court by filing a public interest litigation (PIL).
