Or panelists have found large amounts of floating material in many of the nullahs they visited. Isn’t this contradictory to BMC’s claim that 90% of the nullah-cleaning work has been completed?
We have given you the figures. The BMC has finished its work as per the schedule. We are aware of the presence of floating material, but this is because of plastic and garbage disposed in the nullahs by slum dwellers.
Even though we removed this material, it has been dumped there again.
What measures has the BMC taken to prevent this?
We have asked organisations involved who have been given the responsibility of slums to look into it. We have also placed advertisements in newspapers and hoardings in slums asking people not to throw garbage in nullahs. We have instructed NGOs to make sure slum dwellers dispose garbage in dustbins and not in nullahs.
Organisations who have failed to do so have been penalised. We have collected Rs 4 lakh in fines. Our aim is not to fine them, but to make them work. If they don’t do so, we have no option but to fine them.
There have been complaints that contractors are being paid but have not done any work. Is this true?
There have been complaints about contractors, but none saying that work has not been done. There are issues with some contractors, and we have even taken action against some of them.
We have collected Rs 23 lakh in fines from contractors till now, for not doing their job well.
Can you guarantee Mumbaiites that there will be no waterlogging in the city?
I cannot say that there will be no waterlogging. But I can surely say that what the BMC has done so far will help citizens have a great monsoon season.
Factors such as geographical location and climate are not in our hands. We are doing our best to keep the city moving in the monsoon.
