Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar

The city's elderly continue to be vulnerable.

An 80-year-old man and his wife (74) were drugged, beaten and robbed by their help, hired four days ago, in south Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar on Thursday. They live close to a police beat box.

The police said Mithun Das (22) drugged R.K Katyal by mixing sedatives in his tea. “He was picking the safe when (Katyal’s wife) Shakuntala saw him. He hit her on the head with a cricket bat,” said an officer.

Both have fractures but are stable. Das, who said he was from Kolkata, is absconding.

“The Katyals had hired Das on the reference of their former help,” the officer added.

“This was the first time we’d left them alone,” said daughter Preeti Dewan (44), who lives nearby in the same locality.
