A case under Domestic Violence Act was filed against former Union minister Matang Singh by his wife, Manoranjana, who is Managing Director of North East Television in Guwahati, police on Thursday said.

Singh's wife had filed a case at Paltan Bazaar police station alleging that he had physically assaulted her on Wednesday night.

The police registered a case under Section 498(a) of IPC.

Manoranjana later told PTI that she was being harassed by her husband for several years and was assaulted by him in her office last night.

"I approached the police for my protection as I cannot keep quiet only because he is powerful and a politician. I have been in journalism for many years and it will be timid on my part not to speak out against a person who has been harrassing me throughout my life," she said.

The MD of the satellite channel said she would also approach the National Commission for Women (NCW) and write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Singh, who was Minister of State for Coal and Parliamentary Affairs in the Narasimha Rao ministry, was in New Delhi. When contacted, he denied he had assaulted his wife.
