The Gautam Budh Nagar district administration on Friday asked the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Flyway operator to do away with toll collection during peak hours as it causes huge traffic jams.
On account of repair work on the Kalindi Kunj bridge, Noida-bound traffic from Delhi has been diverted through the DND Flyway. This has had a cascading effect on another Delhi-Noida link, connecting Noida with east Delhi at Mayur Vihar, and other nearby roads.
“I have asked the DND operator to do away with toll collection for a month during peak hours till the work on the Kalindi Kunj bridge is over. Tolling operations cause huge inconvenience to commuters,” said Pushpraj Singh, Noida magistrate.
“To ease traffic situation, the police removed the toll for some time in the morning. We are yet to receive any order. There are no traffic jams on the flyway as the waiting time is only five-six minutes,” said a DND spokesperson.
The move to do away with toll collection on DND Flyway during peak hours will be music to the ears of hassled commuters who have to put up with huge traffic jams daily because of the repair work.
According to a rough estimate, nearly two lakh commuters get caught in traffic jams daily. This week, commuters were stuck in jams for as long as four hours, said district officials.
“Travelling on the DND Flyway between Noida and Delhi has become painful due to the huge jams,” said a traffic police official, requesting anonymity.
Due to partial closure of the Kalindi Kunj carriageway, now only two roads — DND Flyway and Delhi-Noida link road — can be used by commuters.
The UP police too also asked the DND operator to remove toll, after a commuter, Rakesh Jain, lodged an FIR at the Sector 20 police station against the operator on Friday. Jain had alleged that he was struck in a long jam on Thursday and could not take his friend Ashok, a heart patient, to AIIMS in Delhi and that the DND staff did not let his ill friend cross over to Delhi during such an emergency.
