Shocked over the misuse of mobile phones for sending messages, the Department of Telecom has constituted a seven-member committee to look into the matter and prevent any misuse of the technology.

The committee would be headed by Advisor (technology) of DoT AK Bhandari. Other members are officials from Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), BSNL, Bharti and Reliance. The committee held its first meeting on Wednesday.

When contacted, DoT Secretary JS Sarma said, "The committee will submit the report in five days and will look into how such misuse of technology was possible and the subsequent measures to prevent it. The committee will also look into the role of service providers in it."

The demonstration of the misuse was shown by a private TV channel India TV where a SMS was sent from a mobile phone using the Internet without the knowledge of the owner of the mobile phone.

According to India TV, the entire system works on GPRS enabled mobile phone and it can also be done through the use of e-mail. The module works on the principle of changing the unique ID of any mobile number and changing this to a desired mobile number during transfer of mobile number from one operator to another operator.

This can be used for the purpose of international, national as well as local SMSes
