They became the lyrics that defined a generation. With the Bajaj scooter set to be discontinued, ‘Hamara Bajaj’, the immensely popular jingle that had the entire nation humming for two decades, is back in public memory.

HT City caught up with Sumantra Ghosal, the creative head of the team behind the jingle. “It was a very long time ago…. it came about like most jingles do, I suppose — with a bit of luck, and a bit of to-ing and fro-ing between me, the writer Jaikrit Rawat, and Louis Banks, who did the music. I’m afraid there’s no fantastic story around the making” he says.

He goes on to confess he had no idea the advertisement and the song would become as iconic as it did. “No, I didn't expect that it would (become so big). But I was happily surprised that it did and, that too, so quickly and immediately,” he says. “I suppose the words ‘Hamara Bajaj’ have now gone into public consciousness, so it will live with the public for a time, and then there will be a whole new generation who will worry about their iPods. It’s definitely a part of what we recall, and a certain age… and when that age passes, so will the slogan.”
