Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh and some of his family members have been accused of harassing his granddaughter-in-law Priyanka Singh for dowry.
The Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh decided on Monday to seek a CBI enquiry into the matter, after Priyanka’s father Madhavendra Singh filed a complaint on his daughter’s behalf at the Chandausi police station in Moradabad district.
Apart from Arjun Singh and his wife, the FIR names his son Abhimanyu, daughter-in-law Aradhana, grandson Abhijit — who is married to Priyanka — and two other relatives, Dalip Singh and Mandhakini Singh.
It is alleged that all of them were demanding dowry, including a Mercedes car and an apartment in Delhi, from Priyanka.
Arjun Singh sought to distance himself from the matter. “The negotiations relating to the marriage were done directly by my elder son,” he told reporters. “As a family elder, I went for the engagement. But I felt that I was not able to get my views across in many matters so I did not go for the wedding. I have nothing to do with it.”
His son Abhimanyu Singh strongly denied the charge. “My son had filed a divorce petition last April. The girl had gone willingly to her parents’ house,” he said, alleging that the FIR was a “retaliatory act”.
