An IPS officer, serving with the Central Armed Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir now, is in the dock, with his wife residing in Chennai accusing the former with “dowry harassment and cheating”, urging the City Police Commissioner, Mr T Rajendran, to take immediate action in the matter.
Mrs. Sharmila, hailing from Paramakudi in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district down south and who was working as a Probationary Officer in a private bank in Chennai, had barely seven months back got married to the IPS officer, Mr. Samuvel, hailing from the same place, in February 2009.
The newly married couple, as per the information contained in her complaint to the Police Commissioner, had moved to Leh in Ladak, where trouble started for the young bride. Police sources in Chennai while confirming that a complaint had been given, were nonetheless, tight-lipped on the details of the beleaguered woman’s petition.
Mrs. Sharmila alleged in her complaint that soon after setting up home in Ladakh, she was being subjected to torture by the IPS officer, demanding more dowry from her parents. This was despite the fact that the girl’s father had given the groom’s family more than a decent dowry at the time of their wedding, she maintained.
Unable to bear her husband’s harassment and “constant verbal abuse”, Mrs. Sharmila, in her late 20s’, said she came back to her parents’ home in Chennai.
“I am shocked at this; I feel very bad for my former colleague. I understand that she is also pregnant now,” said Sharmila’s friend at the private bank, Ms. Jayashree Balasubramaniam. “She (Sharmila) in fact wanted to sit for the IAS exam and gave up her bank job because she was getting married,” Ms. Jayashree, told HT when reached.
Repeated attempts to reach Mrs. Sharmila at her Chennai residence by this HT Correspondent was of no avail. However, she told a Tamil TV channel this evening that her husband had “attempted to cheat her and marry somebody else again.”
“After our wedding, we stayed in Tamil Nadu for just 15 days before we moved to Leh. He (Samuvel) seemed to be suffering from several complexes; knowing that I am a vegetarian, he would thrust chicken into my mouth in sadistic delight,” Sharmila alleged, adding, her husband had also lied to her before marriage about his religion.
“Again in July last, I went back to Leh again, when I realized that he was one of those 60-odd Police officials transferred from that place to Jammu over the Sophian incident. But he did not even tell me that he was transferred to Jammu,” Sharmila told the channel, adding, Samuvel had even threatened her flaunting his claimed connections with the political top brass in Jammu and Kashmir.
