Brother of a dreaded criminal and a contractor, was shot dead on the busy Arya Samaj Road in Ballia on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Shailendra Chaubey, brother of Kaushal Chaubey, on whose head, the State Government has declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh.

According to the police, the shootout was probably fallout of the gang war between Chaubey and slain mafia Arvind Singh’s gang.

Three unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants shot Shailendra dead from point blank range, while he was eating batashaas at a chaat shop in the market.

According to reports, onlookers also tried to persuade the miscreants to desist from opening fire at Shailendra, however, in vain. The assailants after shooting Shailendra dead, fled on the motorcycle and later took a car, which was later found at Ballia railway station.

It is pertinent to mention that Kaushal Chaubey and his henchmen had allegedly shot dead Arvind Singh, Daya Shanker Singh, Akhilesh Singh, who was also the vice-chairman of the Zila Panchayat and a security guard Satya Prakash Singh in shootout at the PWD premises.

Battle of supremacy on grabbing contracts was stated to be the reason. A named FIR was lodged against Kaushal Chaubey, Anshuman Chaubey, Chandra Chud Chaubey alias Shera and Ajit Chaubey. Police had killed Anshuman, son of Kaushal Chaubey in an encounter on the same day and while had arrested Shera, son of Shailendra Chaubey. Kaushal Chaubey is still absconding.
