Dreev home safely vs Barua
Barua was overawed playing against the top seed and was on the defensive from the beginning.
GM Dibyendu Barua lost to top seed Alexey Dreev, helping the latter go into joint lead with Arun Prasad and GM Safin Shukhrat of Uzbekistan after the sixth round of the 5th Parsvnath International chess tournament here at the IG Stadium on Thursday. Shukhrat defeated GM Abhijit Kunte while Prasad beat GM Saidali Iuldachev.
Barua was overawed playing against the top seed and was on the defensive from the beginning. He opened with a Sicilian Classical and could have traded two pawns for a piece, but failed to take his chances and lost. “I played too passively. He had a stronger game than me,” said Barua.
Another major upset in the sixth round was Kunte losing to Safin playing with white pieces. The disappointment was written large on Kunte's face as he said: “I think I played some bad moves early on. I had a chance to defend and end the game in a draw but I did not take it.” In other results, GM Abhijeet Gupta drew with Ukraine's GM Yuri Drozdovskij and GM Praveen Thipsay drew with IM Anand Poobesh.
