Remember the sequined glove? The flashy jackets? His music may be legendary, but Michael Jackson was no slacker in the style department, either. The pop icon fuelled trends that, in the year since his passing, have only increased in popularity.
One of his most iconic wardrobe choices, MJ’s military jackets, became a symbol of pop cool, fuelled by designers like Christophe Decarnin for Balmain and more massy labels like Zara and Pepe Jeans. Closer home, Nandita Mahtani showed military-inspired jackets on the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.
Worn over a tee or to add edginess to a tube dress, the look is characterised by a slim fit and brass buttons on the front. “Softened versions of the military jackets would be cool to wear. I hope they catch on,” says designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed. “They were so unique to him.”
MJ also wore skinny jeans before the style was even identified. Topped with bling and his trademark flashy detailing, similar styles can be found at J Brand and Diesel. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different washes, though you can’t go wrong with a classic dark pair. Another Michael Jackson staple were his aviator sunglasses. One of the promoters of the sunglasses-worn-indoors trend, MJ was a loyalist and almost never veered from this look. “It’s a classic look,” explains Ahmed. “And they are already very popular.”
