Is the game up for Virender Sehwag in the ODIs? One would be inclined to say yes after the Delhi dasher was dropped for the one-day series against England on Sunday. In the only change in the squad, Cheteshwar Pujara has come in for Sehwag.

Apart from his patchy form - he's averaged just 23 in the past 11 matches - his age, fitness and fielding may deter the selectors from keeping him in the scheme of things in the short format.

It is common knowledge that skipper MS Dhoni, a stickler for fitness in the short formats, isn't too impressed with Sehwag's fielding abilities.

He had dubbed him "slow mover" and had rotated him along with Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar in Australia last year.

With the focus slowly shifting to rebuilding the side for the 2015 World Cup, Sehwag, 34, will find it hard to make a comeback. More so if the new pair at the top grab its chances and establish itself.

The only way he could force his way back is if openers continue to flounder, and he scores heavily at domestic and international levels.

Dhoni explained his omission from Sunday's game as the last-minute change necessitated by the need to give youngster a chance in the dead rubber.

Dropping him for England series, however, seems to be well thought out as the selectors had a long chat with him in the nets on the eve of the Delhi ODI.

While Dhoni continuing as ODI skipper was on expected lines, especially after his good showing with the willow against Pakistan, Gambhir and Rohit Sharma should consider themselves lucky to keep their places.
